If in the previous article we answered 5 questions, this time we will answer 6 more questions about furniture:
- How is furniture measured?
- How furniture is made from wood?
- Are furniture protection plans worth it?
- Will furniture prices go down?
- Will furniture fit in my room?
- Will furniture scratch vinyl flooring?
To measure furniture, you can use a tape measure either in cm, inch, or feet. First, measure the front of the furniture, that’s the length. After that measure the side, that’s the width. Finally, you can measure the height of the item.
The following also completes point 3.
1. Wood selection
It is a primary step in furniture making. The selection of the wood depends on the final application or the kind of furniture it is intended for. For instance, for heavy furniture, it is best to use a hardwood like teak wood, flare wood, mahogany, jackfruit wood, etc.
2. Wood transformation
This process involves cutting the tree into pieces called lumber. The lumber is kiln-dried to reduce the overall moisture content while retaining its essential properties. The transformation is carried out at the sawmill and takes about 2-4 weeks.
3. Wood splitting and cutting
The kiln-dried wood is moved to the machine shop where different parts of the furniture are cut out, clamped together, and passed under a rotating knife to bring it to its required size. The pieces are sanded and veneered if required.
This is where carcasses are assembled, rawers glued up and door frames are put together. Once the glue sets in, clamps are applied. This is then sent back for sanding the joints and shaping the edges that couldn’t be done before assembly. The piece is cleaned thoroughly by the assembly department to remove excess glue.
Wood stains, oils, and paint bring out the beauty of the wood and also provide a layer of protection to the furniture.
Until this article was written, in Indonesia there is no insurance company that covers furniture. Indeed, there are several furniture companies that offer furniture protection programs, but in the form of vouchers worth the price of the furniture that is insured by paying a premium. Hopefully, in the future, there will be a furniture protection plans program.
From year to year, the price of furniture never goes down, in fact, tends to rise. This is because the price of wood is also increasingly expensive. But don’t worry, if you want to buy teak furniture from Bali, you can visit Kaliuda Gallery. Every month we have interesting promos for furniture and home decor. Like in 2020, at the end of the year we held a 75% promo for selected furniture.
It’s a good idea before you buy furniture, make sure you have measured the available space to put your furniture. Especially if there is a wall on the side, try to spare 1-2 cm because your furniture may shrink or expand. To measure the furniture you can see in point 1.
Furniture can give a scratch on the floor when pushed/shifted. Not only on vinyl flooring but also on tiled floors even if there is no protection under the feet. For that, make sure you check the legs of the furniture in your home.
