1. How is furniture measured?

To measure furniture, you can use a tape measure either in cm, inch, or feet. First, measure the front of the furniture, that’s the length. After that measure the side, that’s the width. Finally, you can measure the height of the item.

2. How furniture is made from wood?

The following also completes point 3.

1. Wood selection

It is a primary step in furniture making. The selection of the wood depends on the final application or the kind of furniture it is intended for. For instance, for heavy furniture, it is best to use a hardwood like teak wood, flare wood, mahogany, jackfruit wood, etc.

2. Wood transformation

This process involves cutting the tree into pieces called lumber. The lumber is kiln-dried to reduce the overall moisture content while retaining its essential properties. The transformation is carried out at the sawmill and takes about 2-4 weeks.

3. Wood splitting and cutting

The kiln-dried wood is moved to the machine shop where different parts of the furniture are cut out, clamped together, and passed under a rotating knife to bring it to its required size. The pieces are sanded and veneered if required.

4. Assembly

This is where carcasses are assembled, rawers glued up and door frames are put together. Once the glue sets in, clamps are applied. This is then sent back for sanding the joints and shaping the edges that couldn’t be done before assembly. The piece is cleaned thoroughly by the assembly department to remove excess glue.

Wood stains, oils, and paint bring out the beauty of the wood and also provide a layer of protection to the furniture.
