How to Care Your Teak Furniture?

Teak wood furniture is indeed more expensive than other wood materials. But it can last up to 15-20 years if treated properly. How to take care of teak furniture? Let’s look at the following discussion which has been summarized by the Kaliuda Gallery team.

How to Clean Teak Wood Furniture?

Teakwood has a natural resistance to mold and rot; however, unsightly mold and mildew can still form on the surface of the wood over time. To remove mildew and other natural stains from your teak wood furniture, follow these easy steps.

What You Will Need:

  1. Bucket
  2. Dish detergent
  3. 1 cup bleach
  4. 1-gallon water
  5. Soft, plastic brush
  6. Optional: teak cleaner
Step 1: Clear a space.

Set aside anything you don’t want to get wet. If you are cleaning interior teak furniture, lay down a drop cloth and make sure your space is well ventilated.

Step 2: Rinse the teak furniture.

Using your hose, rinse your furniture. Don’t power-wash – it’s a little too harsh.

Step 3: Use a cleaning solution.

Gently scrub your furniture with a mild cleaning solution – either a store-bought teak cleaner or a homemade solution. You can make your own by adding a small amount of dish detergent to a mixture of 1 cup bleach or white vinegar and 1 gallon of water solution. You can also use a store-bought teak cleaner, but be mindful that store-bought chemical cleaners can be harsh on your furniture and your skin. However, these cleaners are most useful for taking out deep stains from grease. Use a soft plastic brush, as metal brushes can damage the wood’s surface.

Step 4

Leave the furniture for about 15 minutes under the shadows. Do not expose to direct sunlight.

Step 6

Let it dry.

Tip!

Make sure your furniture is not damp to prevent mold growth.

Cleaning Teak Furniture from Stain

Sometimes coffee or tea may leave stains on your teak furniture. To prevent stains from spills onto your teak furniture, you can wipe it up quickly with soapy water and a soft-bristled scrub brush. However, stains that have stayed longer may need a more thorough cleaning with the teak cleaner.

You can use a light sanding of the very top layer of your teak furniture using grade sandpaper and finish off with a fine grade to make the surface look nice and smooth again.

To brush the surface, make sure that you avoid using a brass brush, steel wool, or a pressure washer to clean the surface as it will result in rust spots on your furniture. Using a brass brush or pressure washer can lead to a rough, splintery surface.

Tip!

To avoid glass marks on the surface of the table, use a coasters for both cold and hot water.
